The life of Allison Williams’ character on ‘Girls,’ Marnie Michaels, may have fallen somewhat apart this season (we don’t know which was worse, Charlie’s unceremonious break-up, or that egregious “What I Am” music video – though as Desi so eloquently says on the whole video front, “It really made me just really uncomfortable”). Public humiliation and relationship woes aside, her fashion game is on-point as ever; perhaps even more so.
Allison Williams always been the most put-together of the girls (on and off the show) – the most trend-aware (with the possible exception of Shoshanna – but then, Shosh’s style leans a little more undergrad than Marnie’s career woman duds): and much like Allison Williams in real life, Marnie’s often spotted in prim pencil skirts and jewel toned sheathes – this season, she’s shaken it up a bit more, with some fun outfits like the one shown above. A lot of season 3 saw Marnie finding her take on undone casual (which is to say, not very undone or casual at all).
Case in point: only Allison Williams can look this put together in a beanie and jeans, no? In fact, this little attempt at counterculture chic was probably quite painstakingly selected with Desi in mind – gone are the ultra-high fashion plastic dresses of Booth Jonathan, the preppy get up of Charlie, even the laid back graphic tees of Ray; now it’s time for florals and flowy silhouettes.
Yes, Marnie is something of a style chameleon: but hey, it’s a part of her charm. And besides, you can bet that whatever the look du jour is, it’s sure to be carefully curated – and no matter what your quibbles with Marnie Michaels are, you have to admit she tries. Really hard. And while it doesn’t always work out when it comes to her personal life and career, at least we’re always guaranteed an A+, gold star outfit (you know she was that girl).
